THE GEORGE ENESCU INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL
Bucharest will host the ÒGeorge EnescuÓ International Festival, a prestigious cultural event named after the most famous Romanian
musician and composer. The first edition of this festival took place in 1958 and this 2003 edition will be the 16th.
The Enescu festival was inspired by the fascinating personality of George Enescu, one of the most interesting musicians of the 20th
century.
The festival will feature symphonic and chamber concerts, recitals, opera and ballet performances in major venues of Bucharest.
More than 100,000 people attended the previous edition of the festival in 2001.
Over the years famous orchestras, conductors and soloists have offered exciting concerts in the ÒAtheneum HallÓ and the ÒBig Palace
HallÓ (4,000 seats). Among the special guests were: London Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Wiener Philharmoniker, Bayerischer Rundfunksimphonieorchester,
Sankt Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Scala di Milano, Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse, Lord Yehudi Menuhin, Zubin Mehta, Seiji Ozawa, Lorin
Maazel, Ricardo Muti, Kurt Masur, Christophe Eschenbach, Radu Lupu, Claus Peter Flor, Aldo Ciccolini and many others.
The George Enescu Music Festival is a major event held in Bucharest every 2 years. After the September 2003 festival, the next one
will be held during the autumn 2005.
