Experience fascinating ancient cultures amidst the spectacular pristine beauty of remote regions of Indian Himalaya.  Attend the colorful traditional Hemis Festival. Observe the dances and participate in ceremonies.  In addition to the festival, Nubra Valley and the remote Diskit Monastery, are highlights of this very special Himalayan tour.  

During your journey you will visit traditional villages and ancient monasteries containing priceless collections of thangkas, sculptures and wall paintings and enjoy meetings with lamas and local lay people.  Go where few people have gone before.

Day 1-2: Arrival in Delhi
Sightseeing of Old and New Delhi, based on group's previous India travel experiences.

Day 3-6: Leh & Hemis
Early morning flight to Leh. Tour Leh, visit Spitok Gompa, attend the colorful Hemis Festival.

Day 7: Lamayuru
Visit Lamayuru, the oldest monastery in Ladakh. The fascinating 10th century monastery is located in a spectacular setting and home to the finest collection of frescos, thangkas and carpets that we will see.

Day 8-10: Alchi
Visit Alchi village and monastery. Enjoy beautiful scenics on a float down the Indus River. Return to Leh, enroute visit Likir Gompa.

Day 11: Leh-Shey-Thiske
Visit Shey Palace built in 1645 as a summwr residence for the kings of Ladakh.  Thiske Gompa's 12 levels rise impessively on a rocky hillside. It has a 15 m high clay staue of Buddha to commemorate the Dalai Lama's 1970 visit.

Day 12-13: Hundar-Diskit-Hundar
Drive to Nubra Valley, accessible over the Khardung-la (18,380 ft) the highest motorable road in the world. The valley was a trade route from Leh and Khashgar. Apart from unparalleled trekking opportunities, the valley has several Buddhist monasteries, most important being the 350 year old Diskit Monastery famous for its murals.

Second day drive 23 km to Diskit and walk up to Diskit Monastery to witness the morning prayer ceremony. It takes about 45 minutes to reach the monastery through a long row of scattered chortens. The monastery belonging to yellow sect, has 120 resident monks. After lunch leave for Hundar village through sandy desert valley and visit old fort of Hundar village and small monastery. Overnight in deluxe-bedded camp in Hundar.  All tents have twin beds with clean sheets, quilts and sleeping bags. Shared bathrooms/toilets with modern western facilities.

Day 14: Leh
Drive back to Leh.

Day 15: Delhi - Home
Early morning flight to Delhi. Shared hotel rooms for wash/change near airport.
